Sunday Village Recap: Dream Guardian Autumn Leaf Craft with Printable and Comforting Tomato Soup Recipe

“It takes a village to raise a child.” Each week, as part of building a conscious community, I host a gathering of friends and families that brings us together to cook, craft and play in the open air.

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, autumn invites us to slow down and embrace cozy moments. This season offers the perfect chance to gather with loved ones, create something beautiful, and enjoy simple, warming food. Today, I’m excited to share a delightful autumn leaf craft inspired by the idea of a Dream Guardian, along with a free printable to guide you through the project. To complement this creative activity, I’ll also provide a recipe for a simple, comforting tomato soup that’s perfect for chilly days. Finally, I’ll describe a special winter gathering where we read a favourite book, Cowardly Clyde, making the most of the season’s quiet magic.

Autumn leaves come alive in this Dream Guardian craft, capturing the spirit of the season.

Creating the Dream Guardian Autumn Leaf Craft

This craft is a wonderful way to connect with nature and celebrate the colors of fall. The Dream Guardian represents protection and comfort, perfect for the season when we start to retreat indoors and cherish warmth.

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • A variety of autumn leaves (different shapes and colors)

  • Cardstock or thick paper for the base

  • Glue stick or craft glue

  • Scissors

  • Colored markers or pencils

  • String or ribbon (optional, for hanging)

  • The free printable template (download link included below)

    INSTRUCTIONS

  • Collect Leaves

Take a walk outside and gather leaves that catch your eye. Look for a mix of reds, yellows, oranges, and browns. Choose leaves that are dry but not brittle.

  • Prepare the Base

Print the Dream Guardian template on cardstock. This template includes a simple outline of a guardian figure with space to arrange leaves as wings.

  • Decorate the Leaves

Using a paint pen, add details for your wings as you like. Then preserve the leaf by painting on a thin layer of PVA or school glue. We added a little mica powder to the mix for extra sparkle. Let it dry.

  • Decorate the Guardians

Using pencils or markers colour and decorate your unicorn or dragon printable.

  • Glue the Leaves

Once dry, place the leaf wings on your guardian. Press gently to ensure they stick well.

  • Optional Hanging

Punch a hole at the top and thread a ribbon or string through it to hang your Dream Guardian in a window or on a wall, or use blue tack to place the guardian by your bed and watch over your dreams as the nights grow longer.

TIP:

  • If leaves are too dry and crumbly, press them between heavy books for a day or two to flatten and soften.

  • Use a clear spray sealant if you want your craft to last longer.

  • Encourage children to describe what their Dream Guardian protects or dreams about, adding a storytelling element.

A Simple, Comforting Tomato Soup Recipe

After crafting, nothing beats a warm bowl of soup. This tomato soup is easy to make, uses simple ingredients, and fills the kitchen with inviting aromas. It’s perfect for sharing during your autumn or winter gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 2 Litres vegetable stock

  • 2 medium potatoes, washed and diced

  • 6 cans (about 400g) Roma tomatoes

  • 2 brown onions, peeled and chopped

  • 6 carrots, peeled and chopped

  • Plain yoghurt (for serving)

  • Grated cheese (for serving)

  • Fresh herbs such as parsley or basil (for garnish)

METHOD:

  1. Soften the Vegetables

In a large pot, saute the onions, carrots, and potatoes over medium heat with a little oil or butter. Cook until they start to soften, about 10 minutes.

  2. Add Tomatoes and Stock

Pour in the canned Roma tomatoes and vegetable stock. Bring to a gentle boil.

  3. Slow Cook

Transfer everything to a slow cooker. Let it cook on high for 2 hours, or until the vegetables are very tender.

  4. Blend the Soup

Use an immersion blender or transfer the soup in batches to a blender. Blend until smooth and creamy.

  5. Adjust Seasoning

Taste and add salt and pepper as needed.

  6. Serve

Ladle the soup into bowls. Add a dollop of plain yoghurt, sprinkle with grated cheese, and garnish with fresh herbs.

  • The slow cooking brings out the natural sweetness of the vegetables.

  • Potatoes add creaminess without needing cream.

  • The yoghurt adds a cool tang that balances the rich tomato flavour.

  • Cheese and herbs provide extra layers of taste and texture.

Our Winter Gathering and Reading Cowardly Clyde

One of the highlights of the colder months is gathering with friends or family for quiet, meaningful time together. Last winter, we hosted a small gathering centered around reading a favorite children’s book, Cowardly Clyde.

Beneath the tree we gathered on a large blanket to read

Cowardly Clyde is a charming story about a timid horse who learns to be brave for his friend by “Faking it until he makes it!” As a strange of overcoming fear with bravery it resonates with readers of all ages, making it a perfect choice for an autumn reading book.

As we read aloud, everyone settled in, sharing smiles and quiet moments. The story sparked conversations about bravery and support, tying beautifully to the Dream Guardian theme. After the reading, we enjoyed the tomato soup, topped with yoghurt, cheese, and fresh herbs, savouring the warmth and connection.

Bringing It All Together

This autumn leaf craft and tomato soup recipe offer more than just activities and food. They invite us to slow down, appreciate nature’s changes, and nurture our relationships. The Dream Guardian craft encourages creativity and reflection, while the soup comforts and nourishes. Together, they create a perfect recipe for seasonal joy.

Try making the Dream Guardian craft with your family or friends, then gather around with a bowl of soup and a good book. These simple moments build lasting memories and bring warmth to the colder months.

If you enjoyed this post, download the free printable and share your Dream Guardian creations. Let the spirit of autumn inspire your home and heart.
