Escape Fire is a 184 page graphic novel with rich imagery, warmth and humour that explores the role of anger as a motivating force for change.

Synopsis: When 12 year-old Tuli is dumped with her weird aunt in a run down rainforest shack in the sweltering heat of Australian summer, she is so irritable and lonely she could burst into flames, literally. Her six-year-old cousin, Vihma, talks to invisible creatures and eleven-year-old Autistic, Ohku, is Deaf and has no interest in Tuli’s music. Instead of playing with her band in her cool air-conditioned apartment in the city, she is surrounded by screeching cicadas, crushing heat and the humidity of the bush.

Tuli is tired of being seen as “too old” to express her anger yet “too young” to be given any real responsibility. On the precipice of teendom, she is starting to resent all the adults around her.

During a raging bushfire, Tuli discovers her elemental powers are not unique to her and the cousins must collaborate and harness their magic of the ‘old ways’ to escape to safety. Tuli learns that through embracing what she was taught to suppress, she can use her anger to protect those she loves.
